Early Life and Military Service
Born into a military family, the German officer entered service in February 1910 as a cadet in an artillery regiment. In August 1911, he became a lieutenant and commanded a battery. By August 1915, he had risen to senior lieutenant and in August 1918, he was promoted to captain. During World War I, he earned both Iron Crosses.
Interwar Period
With the reduction of the Reichswehr after the Treaty of Versailles, the officer was dismissed from service in April 1919.
Return to Military in World War II
In August 1936, he rejoined the military. By the outbreak of World War II, he was a major and battery commander. He participated in the Polish and French campaigns and became a lieutenant colonel in August 1940.
On the Eastern and Italian Fronts
From May 1941, he led an artillery regiment in Africa. In December 1941, he received the Knight's Cross. In September 1943, he became Chief of Artillery for the 24th Panzer Corps on the Eastern Front. He was awarded the German Cross in Gold in November 1943.
Promotion and Command
In April 1944, he entered the command reserve and attended a course for division commanders. In July 1944, he became commander of the 26th Panzer Division in Italy. Promoted to general in October 1944, he received the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves in December 1944.
Command of the 12th SS Corps
From January 1945, he commanded the 12th SS Corps on the Rhine River. He became a general-lieutenant in February 1945 and was captured in the Ruhr Pocket in April 1945.
