Eduard Armenakovich Korkotian was born on October 3, 1964, in Yerevan, Armenia, to Armenak Aramovich Korkotian and Tema Samuilovna Ramm. From 1981 to 1986, he pursued a degree in Biochemistry and Immunology at Yerevan State University.
Research Career in Armenia
Between 1987 and 1993, Korkotian served as an intern and junior researcher at the Institute of Physiology named after L. Orbeli, where he investigated monoaminergic inputs in the cerebellum. Upon defending his dissertation, he immigrated to Israel.
Postdoctoral Research and Career in Israel
At the Weizmann Institute of Science, Korkotian completed his postdoctoral training under Professor Menachem Segal, focusing on intracellular calcium stores and neuronal plasticity. Since 2000, he has been a senior scientist and head of the Confocal Microscopy and Electrophysiology Unit at the Weizmann Institute.
International Collaborations and Affiliations
Korkotian has collaborated with institutions worldwide, including the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology (Germany), Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg (Germany), and Perm State University (Russia), where he holds a professorship.
Current Research Interests
Korkotian's research interests lie in molecular mechanisms of synaptic plasticity and the role of microstructures in dendritic spine formation and function.
Patents and Inventions
Korkotian holds patents for inventions related to flavonoids extracted from plants native to the Ural region and their therapeutic potential in alleviating alcohol-induced neurotoxicity.
Teaching and Mentorship
Alongside his research, Korkotian teaches neuroscience courses at Weizmann Institute and Perm State University. He has supervised numerous graduate students and postdocs.
Science Communication and Outreach
Korkotian actively engages in science communication through public lectures, membership in the House of Scientists and Specialists in Rehovot, and contributions to scientific magazines. He has also led projects combining art and science, creating artistic collages based on neuronal photomicrographs.
Creative Writing and Literary Pursuits
Korkotian is a multifaceted individual with interests in poetry, prose, and literary translation. He is a member of the online literary journal "Network Literature" and contributes to the Eurasian literary portal "Megalith."
