Omirbek Arstanuly Zholdasbekov, a distinguished Soviet and Kazakhstani scientist, academic, and statesman, was born in 1930. He pursued his higher education at the prestigious Moscow State University, graduating in 1954 from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics.
Academic and Professional Career
Early Career and ResearchIn the early stages of his career, Zholdasbekov served as an assistant and senior lecturer at the Kazakh Chemical-Technological Institute in Shymkent (1954-1958). He then pursued his graduate studies at the Moscow Textile Institute, earning his doctorate in technical sciences in 1972.
From 1958 to 1962, Zholdasbekov worked as an assistant professor at the Moscow Textile Institute, where he made significant contributions to the fields of mechanics and machine building. His research focused on the development of graphoanalytical and analytical theories for planar and spatial mechanisms, as well as high-class manipulative devices.
Rector of Kazakh State University
In 1970, Zholdasbekov became the Rector of Kazakhstan State University (KazSU), a position he held until 1986. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in advancing the university's academic standing and fostering scientific research.
Director of the Institute of Mechanics and Machine Science
From 1988 to 1994, Zholdasbekov served as Director of the Institute of Mechanics and Machine Science at the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Under his leadership, the institute became a leading center for research in mechanics and machine engineering.
Political Career
In 1994, Zholdasbekov was appointed as Chairman of the Committee on Science, Education, and New Technologies in the Supreme Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan. His insights and expertise played a crucial role in shaping the country's education and science policies.

Throughout his distinguished career, Zholdasbekov authored over 380 scientific works, including 14 monographs, 24 textbooks, and over 100 inventions. His contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the State Prize of the Kazakh SSR (1982) and the title of Honored Scientist of the Kazakh SSR (1974).
Memorial and Honors
In recognition of his profound impact on the scientific and educational landscape of Kazakhstan, several memorials and honors have been established in Zholdasbekov's name. Commemorative plaques have been placed on his former residence in Almaty and at the Kazakh National University named after al-Farabi. A monument to Zholdasbekov was erected at KazNU in 2011, symbolizing his enduring legacy as a pioneer in mechanics and machine science.
