Early Life and Political BeginningsSir Edward Grey, 1st Viscount Grey of Fallodon, was born into a prominent English family. He entered politics as a member of Parliament in 1885, representing the Liberal Party.
Foreign Office Career
In 1892, Grey was appointed Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. He served in this role until 1895 when he became Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, a position he held from 1905 to 1916.
Active Foreign Policy
Grey was a strong advocate for an active foreign policy and colonial expansion. He played a key role in securing agreements with Russia, including the 1907 Anglo-Russian Entente, which helped to solidify the Triple Entente.
World War I
Grey's diplomacy played a significant role in the lead-up to World War I. His negotiations with the German Ambassador, Prince Karl von Lichnowsky, and the Russian Ambassador, Count Alexander Benckendorff, helped to escalate the local conflict between Austria and Serbia into a European and ultimately global war.
