Blessed of the Roman Catholic Church
Marion Zaleski was a Polish priest and martyr who was beatified by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Warsaw on June 13, 1999. He is one of the 108 Blessed Polish Martyrs.
Early Life and Vocation
Zaleski entered the Higher Theological Seminary in Włocławek in the autumn of 1926. On June 14, 1931, he was ordained a priest. In 1931, he went to Rome to study canon law.
Ministry and the War
After completing his studies, Zaleski returned to Poland and served as a vicar in Lipno, Konin, and Kalisz. He also collaborated with the Pauline monks on a new translation of the Bible. In 1938, he returned to Włocławek.
At the outbreak of World War II, Zaleski was appointed vicar general of the Włocławek Diocese. On September 26, 1942, he was arrested by the Gestapo and transported to the Dachau concentration camp.
Martyrdom
On August 10, 1942, Zaleski was killed in the gas chamber along with a transport of disabled prisoners that had arrived that day.
Beatification
On June 13, 1999, Zaleski was beatified by Pope John Paul II together with other Polish martyrs of World War II. His feast day is celebrated on June 12.
