Early Life and Education
Edward Idris Cassidywas born on July 5, 1924, in Sydney, Australia. He received his early education at Parramatta High School in Sydney, before continuing his studies at St Columban's Seminary, Springwood; St Patrick's College, Manly; and the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome (doctorate in canon law). He also attended the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome for diplomatic training.
Priestly Ordination and Pastoral Work
On July 23, 1949, Cassidy was ordained a priest. He served as a pastor in the Diocese of Wagga Wagga from 1950 to 1952.
Diplomatic Career
In 1955, Cassidy entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See as a junior cleric. He served as secretary of the internunciature in India from 1955 to 1962 and as auditor of the nunciature in Ireland from 1962 to 1967. He later held posts as counselor of the nunciature in El Salvador from 1967 to 1969 and Argentina from 1969 to 1970.
Episcopal Appointments
On October 27, 1970, Cassidy was appointed Titular Archbishop of Amantia and Pro-Nuncio to the Republic of China. He was ordained a bishop on November 15, 1970, in the chapel of the Pontifical Urbanian University of Propaganda Fide in Rome.
Cassidy served as Pro-Nuncio in Bangladesh from January 31, 1973, to March 25, 1979. He was then appointed Apostolic Delegate to South Africa and Pro-Nuncio to Lesotho from March 25, 1979, to November 6, 1984.
Vatican Administration
From November 6, 1984, to March 23, 1988, Cassidy served as Pro-Nuncio to the Netherlands. He was subsequently appointed Deputy Secretary of State of the Holy See for General Affairs from March 23, 1988, to December 12, 1989.
President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity
On December 12, 1989, Cassidy was appointed President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. During his eleven years in this role, he actively promoted dialogue with Orthodox, Protestant, and other Christian communities.
Cardinalate
Cassidy was elevated to Cardinal-Deacon with the titular diaconry of Santa Maria in Via Lata on June 28, 1991. He attained the rank of Cardinal-Priest with the titular church of Santa Maria in Via Lata pro hac vice on February 26, 2002.
Retirement and Legacy
Cassidy retired as President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity on March 3, 2001, having reached the canonical age of retirement. He returned to his native Australia.
Cassidy published a book titled "Rediscovering the Second Vatican Council: Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue" in 2005, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Vatican's ecumenical declaration Nostra Aetate. His contributions to interreligious dialogue have been widely recognized.
