Early Life and Education

Edward Samuel Milibandwas born on December 24, 1969, to Polish Jewish immigrants Ralph and Marion Kozak Miliband. His father was a prominent Marxist theorist, and his mother was a political activist and human rights advocate.

Miliband attended Haverstock Comprehensive School in North London from 1980 to 1987. He excelled academically, particularly in mathematics, and was known for his introverted personality. He became actively involved in politics, joining the Labour Party at age 17.

In 1987, Miliband entered Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he studied politics, philosophy, and economics. He continued his political involvement, serving as a student union officer and participating in the BBC's "Young London" program.

Assistant to Gordon Brown

Upon graduating from Oxford, Miliband obtained a master's degree from the London School of Economics. He then worked briefly as a television journalist for the BBC.

In 1993, Miliband joined the Labour Party's Shadow Cabinet as a speechwriter for Harriet Harman. The following year, he became a speechwriter for Gordon Brown, the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer. He was appointed Brown's Chief Economic Adviser in 1999.

Member of Parliament

In March 2005, Miliband was selected as the Labour candidate for Doncaster North. He was elected to the House of Commons in May 2005. In May 2006, he became Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Third Sector.

Cabinet Minister

In June 2007, Gordon Brown became Prime Minister and appointed Miliband Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. In October 2008, he was promoted to Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change.

Labour Leadership

Following Labour's defeat in the 2010 general election, Miliband declared his candidacy for the leadership of the party. He called for Labour to move away from the policies of Blair and Brown and "unite around new ideas."

On September 25, 2010, Miliband narrowly defeated his brother, David, to become Leader of the Labour Party.

Personal Life

Miliband is married to Justine Thornton, a lawyer. They have one son, Daniel, born in May 2009.
