Biography of Egor Tomko
Vice Admiral, Hero of the Soviet Union, Soviet military leader, Hero of the Soviet Union, Commander of the 11th Division of Atomic Submarines (APL) of the Red Banner Northern Fleet, Vice Admiral.
Early Life and Career
Egor Andreievich Tomko was born on August 3, 1935, in the village of Leonovtsy, Miory District, Vitebsk Oblast, Belarus, into a peasant family. He was of Belarusian descent. In 1957, he became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Tomko joined the Navy in 1954 and graduated from the Higher Naval Academy in 1958.
Commander of the Northern Fleet
As the commander of the Northern Fleet's division of multi-purpose submarines of the "Skat" project 670 and "Granit" project 949 with cruise missiles on board, Captain 1st Rank Tomko E.A. played a significant role in the development of new technology. From August 26 to September 7, 1978, he participated in the crossing of two submarines, "K-212" (commanded by Captain 3rd Rank Gusev A.A.) and "K-325" (commanded by Captain 2nd Rank Lushin V.P.), under the Arctic ice from the Northern to the Pacific Fleet.
Hero of the Soviet Union
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on November 4, 1978, Captain 1st Rank Egor Tomko was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for the successful execution of tasks, as well as for his courage and bravery displayed during his service.
Later Career and Legacy
In late 1984, Tomko, now a Rear Admiral, joined the command of the Leningrad Higher Naval Academy of Submarine Navigation named after the Lenin Komsomol. He retired as a Vice Admiral in February 1992 and lived in Saint Petersburg. He served as the chairman of the board of the International Fund of Sailors-Submariners and Veterans of the Submarine Fleet.
Egor Andreievich Tomko passed away on April 1, 2008. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, the Order "For Service to the Homeland in the Armed Forces of the USSR" 2nd and 3rd degrees, the Order of Courage, and the Gold Star Medal of the Hero of the Soviet Union. His military uniform, documents, and photographs are carefully preserved in the exhibition of the Historical and Local Lore Museum of Secondary School No. 3 in the city of Miory, Vitebsk Oblast, Belarus, honoring the renowned local Hero of the Soviet Union, E.A. Tomko.
