On August 12, 1978, he made his Bundesliga debut in a match against the formidable Bayern Munich. Immel's performance was remarkable, keeping a clean sheet and contributing to a 1-0 victory.
Legendary Status at Borussia Dortmund
Over the next eight seasons, Immel established himself as a cornerstone of Borussia Dortmund's defense, playing 247 matches. His heroic saves and unwavering presence cemented his status as one of the club's most legendary goalkeepers.
Transfer to Stuttgart: Record-Breaking Fee
In 1986, Immel signed with VfB Stuttgart for a transfer fee of 2 million marks, making him the most expensive goalkeeper at the time. Despite a disappointing debut, Immel quickly became a fan favorite, playing 287 matches for the club. His dedication and exceptional skills earned him the respect and admiration of the Stuttgart supporters.
International Career and Controversial Decision
Immel made his international debut for Germany in 1980, accumulating 19 appearances. In 1988, he made the controversial decision to withdraw from the national team due to a perceived lack of trust from the coaching staff. However, he later admitted that this decision was a hasty one.

Under the guidance of Stuttgart, Immel reached the pinnacle of his career, winning the Bundesliga championship in the 1991/92 season and becoming the runner-up in the 1988/89 UEFA Cup.
In the summer of 1995, Immel moved to Manchester City in England, where he played for one full season before retiring from professional football in 1997.
