Early Life and Education

Cem Özdemir was born on April 21, 1971, in Tokat, Turkey. He immigrated to Germany with his family as a teenager and settled in Weißenshorn, Bavaria. Özdemir attended high school there and later studied at the universities of Konstanz and Vienna.

Political Career

Early Involvement

Özdemir's political involvement began as a student when he joined the youth wing of the Alliance 90/The Greens party in Bavaria. He became a naturalized German citizen in February 1997.

Election to the Bundestag

Özdemir was elected to the German Bundestag in 1998 and has been re-elected in 2002, 2005, and 2009. He served as a member of the Green parliamentary group from 2002 to 2005 and as deputy spokesperson from 2009 to 2013.

Armenian Genocide Resolution

In 2016, Özdemir cast a crucial vote in favor of a resolution recognizing the 1915 Armenian genocide. This action attracted significant backlash and death threats from Turkey. Özdemir and other German MPs of Turkish descent who supported the resolution received police protection and other security measures.

Özdemir is married and has two children.
