Kunsang Choden Namgyel: A Trailblazing Diplomat and Politician
Early Life and EducationKunsang Choden Namgyel is a Bhutanese politician and diplomat who has made her mark as a pioneer in both fields. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Lady Keane College, a constituent college of the North-Eastern Hill University, in Shillong, India.
Diplomatic Career
In March 1980, Namgyel joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where she rose through the ranks. On January 3, 2014, she made history by becoming the first woman to represent Bhutan's diplomatic service as an Ambassador. She was appointed to the post of Permanent Representative to the United Nations by a royal decree.
Ambassadorship to the UN
During her tenure as Ambassador to the UN, Namgyel actively participated in various international forums. In November 2014, she led the Bhutanese delegation to the UN's Second Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries in Vienna. She highlighted the challenges faced by Bhutan as a landlocked nation.
Namgyel also played a significant role in Bhutan's signature of the Paris Agreement on climate change on April 22, 2016. She emphasized Bhutan's vulnerability to climate change and urged the 174 other countries that signed the agreement to support Bhutan's efforts in combating the issue.
Return to Bhutan
Namgyel served as Ambassador to the UN until August 2017. She subsequently took up the position of Chief of Protocol in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bhutan.
