Life and Education
Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli was born in Brescia, Italy, on January 5, 1920. He displayed musical talent from an early age and began studying piano at the age of 9.
Studies with Master Teachers
Michelangeli studied in Bologna with renowned teachers such as Ferruccio Busoni, Bruno Mugellini, and Filippo Ivaldi. He also studied composition under Giacomo Benvenuti.
Early Career and Departure from Concert Stage
Michelangeli made his concert debut at the age of 13. However, he soon decided to withdraw from the concert stage due to severe stage fright.
Focus on Pedagogy
Michelangeli devoted much of his career to teaching. He taught at prestigious institutions such as the Venice, Rome, and Milan Conservatories, the Accademia Chigiana, the Weimar Hochschule für Musik, and the Sibelius Academy. Among his notable students were Maria Tipo, Ursula Oppens, Hamish Milne, Yonty Solomon, Paek Kon Woo, and Emmanuel Krasowsky.
Return to the Concert Stage
In 1967, Michelangeli resumed giving concerts, primarily in chamber music ensembles. He performed with cellist Enrico Mainardi, flutist Severino Gazzelloni, and the Rome Quartet.
Recordings and Transcriptions
Michelangeli recorded several albums, including Beethoven's piano sonatas and Debussy's preludes. He also transcribed several excerpts from Igor Stravinsky's ballet "The Firebird" for piano.

Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli is regarded as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. His performances were characterized by their technical precision, musical sensitivity, and emotional intensity.
