Elena Korovai: A Renowned Artist and Educator

Early Life and Artistic Education

Born in Voronezh, Russia, Elena Korovai embarked on her художественное (artistic) journey in the Moscow school of the Society for the Encouragement of Artists (1914-1918) under the tutelage of renowned artists N.K. Rerikh and P.S. Naumov. She continued her studies at the Higher Artistic and Technical Workshops (1920-1923).

A Life in Art

In 1917, Korovai moved to Barnaul, where she played an instrumental role in the local art scene. She taught at the Barnaul art studio, became a member of the Altai Art Society, and exhibited her works. From 1927 to 1946, she resided in Central Asia, where she continued to paint and create.

Invitation to Moscow

In 1946, at the invitation of V.A. Favorsky, Korovai relocated to Moscow. There, she found success as an illustrator and designer of children's books, published by the Samarkand art factory.

Theatrical Contributions

Beyond her work on canvas, Korovai made significant contributions to the theater world as a stage and costume designer. She collaborated with prestigious theaters such as the State Theater of Uzbek Drama named after Hamza, the State Regional Uzbek Theater named after Alimjanov, as well as the Russian Drama Theater and the Youth Theater in Samarkand.

Elena Korovai emerged as a highly acclaimed artist with a distinctive style that set her apart. Her works continue to be showcased in museums in Moscow, Omsk, Samarkand, Nukus, and the Museum of Karakalpakstan.
