Early Life and Education
Ekaterina D. Kruglikova-Malofeevawas born on June 16, 1907, in Podolsk. She began her musical studies in the Podolsk Proletkult, where she sang in the choir from 1923 to 1924. She then enrolled in the Rubinstein Brothers Music College.
Career at the Bolshoi Theatre
In 1931, Kruglikova joined the All-Union Radio as an artist. In 1932, she became a soloist with the Bolshoi Theatre, a position she held until 1956. During this time, she graduated from the Moscow State Conservatory, studying under K. N. Dorliak.
Wartime and Humanitarian Efforts
Throughout World War II, Kruglikova performed with front-line brigades and in hospitals. In 1943, she and the Bolshoi Theater donated their Stalin Prize to the Defense Fund.
International Recognition
Kruglikova's performances earned her acclaim both domestically and internationally. She toured extensively in Yugoslavia, Poland, Bulgaria, and Romania.
Pedagogical Career
After leaving the Bolshoi Theatre, Kruglikova dedicated herself to teaching. From 1957 to 1960, she served as the artistic director of the vocal department at the All-Union State Concert Organization. She taught at the Gnesin State Musical Pedagogical Institute from 1958 to 1959, and at the Moscow State Conservatory and its affiliated music school from 1960 to 1976. She was awarded the title of Docent in 1961.
Legacy
Kruglikova's interpretations of Russian and foreign classical music won the acclaim of audiences. Her voice possessed a warm, lyrical quality, and she was particularly adept at conveying subtle emotional nuances. As one of the leading members of the Bolshoi's opera troupe in the 1930s and 1940s, she participated in major productions, including Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin." Her interpretation of the role of Tatyana is widely regarded as one of the finest in the history of the opera.
Death and Legacy
Elena Kruglikova passed away on June 24, 1982. She is buried at the Vagankovo Cemetery in Moscow. Her legacy as a gifted singer and dedicated pedagogue continues to inspire generations of musicians.
