Biography of Elena Metelitsyna
Elena Metelitsyna, an art dealer, gallerist, and journalist, was born on May 13, 1964, in Tambov, Russia. She grew up moving between different educational institutions, enjoying a lively childhood like any ordinary child. In 1987, she graduated from the Moscow Institute of Electronic Technology, specializing in microdevices and cybernetics.
Early Career
After a few years working in her field, Metelitsyna took a vacation to Gelendzhik, Russia, in 1989, accompanied by her three-year-old son, Alexander. It was during this trip that she met a journalist who had just opened his own television studio, a branch of Russian Television, and was looking for a news anchor. The candidate was required to have a higher education degree, and Metelitsyna turned out to be the only one in Gelendzhik who met the employment criteria. She was convinced to stay, and when she eventually returned to Moscow, her husband suggested she pursue studies at the Institute of Television and Radio Broadcasting.
Television Career
Upon graduating from the institute in 1994, Metelitsyna worked at Central Television in Russia, appearing on programs such as "Business Russia" and reading cultural news for "ITAR-TASS." In 1998-1999, she travelled to the United States where she produced documentaries featuring Yuri Cooper, Ernst Neizvestny, and Vasily Aksenov. After a brief period as a homemaker and the birth of her daughter, Elizaveta, Metelitsyna experienced a divorce.
Art Dealer and Gallerist
Fate eventually brought Metelitsyna together with art dealer Igor Metelitsyn, who would become her husband. Initially, as a technician, she had no intention of pursuing a career in the art gallery business. However, Igor and his approach to work helped her see it in a different light. He initially asked her to assist with public relations, which gradually drew Metelitsyna into the field. Together with Igor, she worked on numerous catalogs, overseeing the technical aspects. Despite her extensive knowledge of artists and the workings of the art dealing industry, she credits her husband as the main idea generator. Since 2002, Metelitsyna has been the director of the Moscow gallery "London Contemporary Art," which is currently known as the "Igor Metelitsyn Gallery."
Present Life
Since 2007, Metelitsyna has been living in the United States, occasionally traveling to Russia and Croatia for work and leisure. Her life is, in essence, split between three geographic points: New York, Ravin, and Moscow.
