Anya Eftimiou

Early Life and Education

Anya Eftimiou was born in 1954 in Argos, Greece. She immigrated to Canada and later attended McGill University, where she earned Bachelor's degrees with honors in Political Science and History. She also studied Law at the same institution.

Political Career

Eftimiou became the first Greek-born immigrant elected to the Canadian Parliament in 1993. As a member of the Liberal Party of Canada, she represented the Saint-Denis (1993-1997) and Hochelaga (1997-2006) ridings.

During her tenure in the House of Commons of Canada, Eftimiou held several notable positions, including:

- Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada (1997-1999)

- Chair of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration

- Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons

In 2006, Eftimiou was defeated in her bid for re-election by Maria Mourani of the Bloc Québécois. She unsuccessfully attempted to return to Parliament in 2008 and later ran unsuccessfully in the 2012 Quebec provincial election.

Personal Life

Eftimiou is married and has two daughters. She is a practicing member of the Orthodox Christian faith.

Recognition

In 1999, Eftimiou was awarded the Commander of the Greek Order of the Phoenix.
