Eva-Maria Liimets: A Career in Diplomacy and Politics

Early Life and Education

Eva-Maria Liimets was born on May 31, 1974, in Tallinn, Estonia. She graduated from the University of Tartu in 1996 with a degree in public administration. In 2005, she earned a master's degree in international business management from the Estonian Business School.

Career in the Foreign Ministry

Liimets joined the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1997. From 1999 to 2003, she served as an economic diplomat at the embassy in Rome. She then held various positions in the ministry, including Second Secretary in the Political Department (2003-2006), First Secretary and Deputy Head of Mission in Washington, D.C. (2006-2009), and Director of the International Organizations Department (2009-2014).

Diplomatic Assignments

In 2014, Liimets was appointed Consul General in New York City. From 2017 to 2018, she served as an advisor in the European Department of the Foreign Ministry. During this period, she also served as Estonia's ambassador to the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Croatia (2017-2021).

Minister of Foreign Affairs

On January 26, 2021, Liimets was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. In this role, she oversees Estonia's foreign policy and represents the country on the international stage.
