Early Life and Education

Elie Tahari, the eldest child in his family, was born in 1952 in Jerusalem. His parents immigrated to Israel from Iran and lived in a displaced persons camp in the village of Al-Kastal, which is now the suburb of Mevaseret Zion. From 1953 to 1957, the family returned to Iran before moving back to Israel. When Tahari's parents divorced and his father remarried, he was placed in a children's home in Rishon Lezion and later in Tel Aviv by Israel's social services. He spent his teenage years in the kibbutz of Kvutzat Schiller and the Israeli Air Force boarding school in Haifa.

Early Career and Immigration to the United States

In 1971, Tahari, who was working as an electrician, immigrated to the United States. He moved to New York, where he searched for work in the fashion district of Manhattan, which is home to numerous clothing stores, ateliers, and manufacturing facilities. Tahari slept in modest hotels run by the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) or even on benches in Central Park. In Manhattan, he learned about women's fashion by working as a salesman in a boutique in Greenwich Village and became interested in the creation of women's and men's fashion. One of his first collections was inspired by the city's nightclubs, featuring playful and flirtatious dresses that were well-received by customers. This marked the beginning of his own fashion brand. At the age of 22, Tahari became one of the first designers to open his own boutique on Madison Avenue in 1974.

Success and Expansion

Thanks to his sharp intuition and ability to predict what women would want from fashion before they even knew it themselves, Tahari focused on strict English suits in the 1980s, anticipating the fashion trend of the 1990s. He met his future wife, Rory, after his 46th birthday. Together, they significantly increased the company's turnover over five years and invited top models such as Agyness Deyn, Daria Werbowy, and Eugenia Volodina to showcase their collections. In 1997, Elie Tahari and his former business partner, Andrew Rosen, founded the brand "Theory fashion." Tahari designed the clothing while Rosen was responsible for marketing and sales. Tahari sold his stake in the company in 2003 and is no longer associated with it.
