Biography of Elizabeth Bainbridge
Elizabeth Bainbridge is a British opera singer, mezzo-soprano, and contralto from Sussex, England. Her performing career spanned several decades, but her greatest success came when she sang with the Royal Opera House troupe in Covent Garden, London.
Early Life and Career
Elizabeth was born on March 28, 1930, in Rawtenstall, Lancashire, in the northern part of England. At the age of fourteen, during World War II, she dropped out of school and began working at a local textile factory. However, Elizabeth's passion for singing soon overshadowed her job.
Her debut at the renowned Glyndebourne occurred in 1963 when she performed the role of the Third Lady in Mozart's "Die Zauberflöte." The following year, she made her debut at Covent Garden in a production of Wagner's "Die Walküre." In 1965, Elizabeth Bainbridge became a member of the opera troupe, and from that moment on, she performed on the stage of the Royal Opera over a thousand times.
International Performances
Bainbridge also went on international tours, performing in theaters in Japan, Korea, the United States, Argentina, Israel, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and Greece. In 1966, she participated in the recording of the only opera composed by American composer Bernard Herrmann, "Wuthering Heights," under his direction.
Personal Life and Retirement
In 1954, Elizabeth gave birth to her son, Godfrey John. Her first grandson, Christopher John, was born in 1985, followed by her second grandson, Julian Robin, in 1990. She married Jamaican-born Philon Castell Morris in the 1970s, but became a widow in 1988.
Currently, Bainbridge has retired from her performing career and resides in Emsworth, a town in southern England.
