Elizabeth Bolden, an American supercentenarian and Guinness World Records holder, was born on August 27, 1890, in Somerville, Tennessee. She was born into a family of freed slaves. Elizabeth married Lewis Bolden around 1908, and their first child, a son named Ezell, was born on September 21, 1909.
A Life of Farming
Throughout her working life, Elizabeth primarily worked as a farmer. After her husband's death in 1950, she moved to a nursing home in Memphis, Tennessee, where she lived until her passing.
The Last Years
In her final years, Elizabeth's health declined, and she struggled with speaking and spent most of her time sleeping. Her relatives believed she was unable to communicate and requested limited media attention, such as interviews and visits.
A Record Holder
While holding the title of the world's oldest person, Elizabeth rarely appeared in public. She passed away on December 11, 2006, at the nursing home in Memphis at the age of 116 years and 118 days. Following her death, the title of the world's oldest person was passed to Emiliano Mercado del Toro, a 115-year-old Puerto Rican who held the title for just over a month.
Family and Legacy
Elizabeth Bolden married Lewis Bolden in 1908, and they had seven children together. Only two of her children, 89-year-old Esther Rhodes and 86-year-old Mamy Brittmon, outlived their mother. At the time of her 116th birthday, Elizabeth had 40 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, 150 great-great-grandchildren, 220 great-great-great-grandchildren, and 75 great-great-great-great-grandchildren.
On August 27, 2006, after the death of Ecuadorian supercentenarian Maria Esther de Capovilla, Elizabeth Bolden became the world's oldest living person. This was officially confirmed by Guinness World Records representatives on September 17, 2006.
In July 2006, Elizabeth Bolden entered the top ten oldest people in history. At the time of her death at the age of 116 years and 118 days, she ranked eighth on the list, according to data from December 2009. She remains the last fully verified person born in 1890.
