Elizaveta Gonzaga

Elizabeth Gonzaga was born into the noble Gonzaga family, the daughter of Federico I and Margaret of Bavaria. She grew up in the opulent Palazzo Ducale in Mantua, where she spent her childhood and adolescence.
Marriage and Personal Life
In February 1488, Elizabeth married Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino. However, their marriage was not a happy one. Guidobaldo was an invalid, suffering from gout and rheumatoid arthritis that deformed his body from a young age. Despite this, Elizabeth was praised for her unwavering patience and devotion to her husband.
Political Turmoil
In 1502, Elizabeth and Guidobaldo were forced to flee Urbino when Cesare Borgia seized their territory. They lived in Mantua for a time and then returned to Urbino in 1503. In 1516, they moved back to Mantua due to a conflict between their nephew, Francesco Maria della Rovere, and Pope Leo X. They returned to Urbino in 1521 after the Pope's death.
Cultural Patronage
Elizabeth Gonzaga was one of the most educated women of her time. She transformed the Urbino court into a prominent center of Renaissance culture. She gathered a circle of humanists around her, including Baldassare Castiglione and Pietro Bembo. Raphael frequently visited Urbino and was a beloved guest of the court.
