Princess Clémentine was born on July 30, 1872, in the Royal Palace of Laeken, Belgium. She was the fourth child and third daughter of King Leopold II of Belgium and his wife, Queen Marie Henriette.
Troubled Family Life
The birth of a daughter instead of an heir strained the relationship between Princess Clémentine's parents. King Leopold II planned to marry Clémentine to her cousin, Prince Baudouin, but the prince's untimely death in 1891 prevented the union.
Loyal Support for Her Father
Despite the family scandals and her father's controversial relationship with Blanche Delacroix, Princess Clémentine remained a loyal supporter of King Leopold II. She fulfilled royal duties and became the first lady of the kingdom after her mother's death in 1902.
Marriage to Prince Napoléon Victor
In 1888, Prince Napoléon Victor of France visited Belgium and met Princess Clémentine. Despite her father's initial disapproval, King Albert I granted permission for their marriage after Leopold II's death in 1909. They were wed on November 14, 1910.
