Early Career and Rise to Prominence

Born in Azerbaijan, Vagif Gafar oglu Gumbatov began his professional football career in 1990 with the Second League club MÇOP-Termist. In 1992, he joined the newly formed Azerbaijan Football Championship, representing various clubs, including Neftchi Baku. Gumbatov's impressive performances earned him a call-up to the Azerbaijan national team in 1998, where he participated in European Championship qualifying matches.

International Experience and Success

In 1993, Gumbatov moved to Russia, playing for Anzhi and FC Dynamo. After a brief return to Azerbaijan in 1994, he ventured into Uzbekistan in 1998, joining Navbahor. Despite scoring seven goals in 15 games, Gumbatov returned to Neftchi Baku in 1999. He later had stints at Dynamo Samarkand and Navbahor before undergoing trials with Russian club Torpedo-ZIL in 2001. However, he ultimately returned to Uzbekistan.

Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Return to Azerbaijan

In 2002, Gumbatov moved to Kazakhstan, joining Yesil-Bogatyr. After a short spell with Mash'al in Uzbekistan in 2003, he returned to Neftchi Baku for two seasons. A notable incident occurred in 2005 when Gumbatov angrily removed his Neftchi shirt in protest against being substituted, effectively ending his tenure with the club.

Later Career and Coaching

Gumbatov moved to Kyapaz in 2005, followed by a transfer to Olimpik Baku in the 2005/06 winter transfer window. In 2007, he played for Shurtan in Uzbekistan before joining Simurg on a six-month contract. Family circumstances led him to rejoin Dynamo Samarkand in 2008, and he later returned to Azerbaijan to play for FC Baku.

Since 2009, Gumbatov has resided in New York City, where he coaches the local football club Chornomorets. He is actively involved in youth football and participates in various veterans tournaments organized in the US.
