Early Life and Military ServiceÉdouard Marie Léon Courbet was born on March 18, 1856, in France. He began his military career in Algeria and rose through the ranks, becoming a brigadier general in 1850 and a divisional general in 1853.
Crimean War
During the Crimean War (1853-1856), Courbet commanded the 1st Infantry Division from February 23 to September 26, 1854. Following the death of Marshal Saint-Arnaud, he assumed overall command of the French army at Sevastopol on September 26.
Siege of Sevastopol
Courbet led the Siege of Sevastopol from September 1854 to May 1855. The Allied forces conducted a massive bombardment of the city, but the assault was delayed due to endless disputes between the commanders and their governments.
Command of the Eastern Army
On May 16, 1855, Courbet resigned as commander-in-chief due to the interference in his affairs. He remained with the siege forces, commanding various divisions and corps until August 1855.
Post-Crimean War
After the war, Courbet served as aide-de-camp to Emperor Napoleon III from August 1855 to March 1856. He later commanded the Châlons camp and various army corps in the years leading up to the Franco-Prussian War.
Franco-Prussian War
During the Franco-Prussian War (1870), Courbet commanded the VI Corps of the Army of the Rhine. He refused to take overall command of the army and was replaced by Marshal Bazaine. He fought valiantly during the Siege of Metz and was captured and held as a prisoner of war until the end of the conflict.
Later Years and Legacy
After the war, Courbet served as a member of the High Military Council of France and as a senator. He died on January 7, 1894. Courbet was a distinguished military figure who played a significant role in the Crimean War and the defense of France during the Franco-Prussian War.
