Early Life and Inspiration
Born circa 1979 in Montreal, Emilia Hampshire developed a passion for acting at the age of 11 after attending a performance of "Les Misérables." Her interest was encouraged by her Catholic all-girls school's vice-principal, who praised her performance in a school play. At 16, she relocated to Toronto to pursue acting in television and film. Despite being accepted into the American Academy of Dramatic Arts shortly after graduating high school, she never attended due to conflicting filming commitments.
Professional Career
Early Roles and Voiceover WorkHampshire's professional acting career in the Canadian film and television industry began in 1996. She appeared in Canadian series such as "This Space For Rent," "Carl²," and "Northern Town." In 1999, she played Margaret in Jerry Ciccoritti's feature film "Life Before This," which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
In addition to her on-screen roles, Hampshire voiced characters such as Misery in "Ruby Gloom," Diane Barry in "Anne of Green Gables: The Animated Series," Chloe Crashman in "Carl Squared," Starr in "6Teen," and Alison Malitski in "Braceface."
Breakthrough Roles
In 2006, Hampshire gained wider recognition for her role as Chanel in the romantic comedy "It's a Boy Girl Thing." She also starred as Alexandra, Leon Trotsky's mistress, in "Trotsky" (2009) and in the Canadian indie film "Good Neighbours" (2010).
In 2012, Hampshire's performance as Jane Melman in David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis" and in Sean Garrity's comedy "My Awkward Sexual Adventure" earned her critical acclaim. She also starred in the futuristic zombie film "Return."
Television Success
In 2014, Hampshire joined the Syfy series "12 Monkeys" as the recurring character Jennifer Goines, a reimagined version of Brad Pitt's character from the film on which the series is based. From 2015 to 2020, she played Stevie Budd in the CBC sitcom "Schitt's Creek."
Recent Projects
In 2021, Hampshire appeared in The Tragically Hip's music video for "Not Necessary" from their EP "Saskadelphia." She also starred in the film series "Chapelwaite" (2021-present) and "The Rig" (2023-present).
Personal Life
In 2006, Hampshire married Matthew Smith, a former football player turned talent agent at the William Morris Agency. They divorced shortly before she landed her role in "Schitt's Creek" in 2014. In September 2018, it was confirmed that Hampshire was in a relationship with singer-songwriter Teddy Geiger; they became engaged in November 2018. They broke off their engagement on June 10, 2019. Hampshire identifies as pansexual.
In 2007, Hampshire relocated to Los Angeles. She became a naturalized U.S. citizen in September 2014 and currently divides her time between Los Angeles and Toronto.
