Emmanuelle Haïm is a French harpsichordist and conductor who has gained recognition for her unique interpretations of Baroque opera. She attended the Paris Conservatoire and honed her skills as a harpsichordist in the renowned ensemble "Les Arts Florissants" led by William Christie.
Establishing "Le Concert d'Astrée"
In the year 2000, Haïm founded her own ensemble for early music called "Le Concert d'Astrée". With this ensemble, she has embarked on numerous successful musical projects and has received critical acclaim for her innovative approach to historical performances.
Conducting Career
In 2001, Haïm made her debut as a conductor, leading a production of George Frideric Handel's "Rodelinda" as part of the Glyndebourne Festival's touring program. Her conducting skills were further showcased in 2006 when she conducted Handel's "Giulio Cesare" at Glyndebourne, although the reaction from critics was somewhat lukewarm.
One of Haïm's most notable achievements came in 2007 when she became the first female conductor in the 55-year history of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. She took the podium to conduct a production of Handel's "Giulio Cesare," solidifying her reputation as an exceptional conductor in the realm of Baroque opera.

Critics have hailed Emmanuelle Haïm as one of the most interesting and unconventional interpreters of Baroque opera. She is considered one of the leading figures in the new generation of authentic performers. Her ensemble, "Le Concert d'Astrée," has been recognized with the prestigious "Victoires de la Musique" award twice. In 2003, they were awarded as the best instrumental ensemble of the year, and in 2008, alongside the soloist Philippe Jaroussky, they received the award for the best recording of the year for "Carestini: The Story of a Castrato."
In 2009, Haïm and her ensemble, with the participation of several outstanding soloists, released the album "Lamenti," a collection of Baroque love arias. This recording was also honored with the award for the best recording of the year.
