Early Life and Education

Born in Britain, the diplomat pursued theoretical physics at University College Cardiff. He went on to earn his PhD in polymer physics from St Catharine's College, Cambridge.

Diplomatic Career

In 1973, the diplomat joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. His tenure spanned key roles, including Political Director of the Foreign Office from 1998 to 2001. Subsequently, he served as the United Kingdom's Permanent Representative to NATO from 2001 to 2003 and to the United Nations from 2003 to 2007.

Academia and Accolades

Since 2008, the diplomat has held the presidency of Aberystwyth University. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he was knighted in 2007 as a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George.
