Enrichetta Caracciolo (née Forino) was an Italian writer, journalist, and active participant in the Risorgimento, the Italian unification movement.

Early Life

Enrichetta Caracciolo was born into the Forino family, which descended from the noble Caracciolo lineage of Naples. She was one of five daughters. Following her father's death, Enrichetta was unwillingly confined to a convent of Benedictine nuns. She was subsequently transferred between several convents until, through the intervention of the papal nuncio, she was finally released in 1854.

Marriage and Revolutionary Support

Shortly after her release, Enrichetta married Giovanni Greuther, a Neapolitan of German descent and a loyal supporter of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the legendary figure of the Risorgimento.

Literary Impact

Enrichetta Caracciolo's experiences in the convents inspired her to publish her memoirs, "Тайны женских монастырей в Неаполе," or "Confessions of a Nun." The Russian translation of her work appeared in "Заграничном вестнике" in 1865, gaining significant recognition and impacting the public discourse on the treatment of women in religious institutions during the Risorgimento period.
