Early Life and EducationBorn in Uruguay, Graffman began playing the piano at an early age. After making his debut in his home country, he traveled to the United States as a recipient of an Organization of American States scholarship. He studied at the Peabody Conservatory under the tutelage of acclaimed pianist Leon Fleisher.
Competition Success and Teaching Career
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Graffman achieved success in several major American piano competitions. He notably won the prestigious Capella International Piano Competition in 1978. Subsequently, he taught piano at Carnegie Mellon University and later at the College of Charleston.
Recordings and Repertoire
Graffman has recorded numerous albums featuring works by renowned composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Poulenc, and Gershwin. He is particularly known for his interpretations of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier and Beethoven's sonatas.
