Enrique Gratas is a renowned journalist and news anchor who has made significant contributions to the Hispanic television news landscape in the United States.
Early Career in Argentina
Gratas's journalistic career began in Argentina in 1966 as a radio announcer. He later ventured into television news in 1967.
Immigration to the United States
In 1971, Gratas moved to the United States and worked as a correspondent for Argentine television. He then joined the sports department of Los Angeles television station KWHY-TV.
Pioneering Hispanic Sports Coverage
In 1978, Gratas hosted the first Spanish-language sports program on KMEX-TV in Los Angeles.
Rise to Prominence
From 1981 to 1985, Gratas served as news director for WXTV in New Jersey. In 1990, he relocated to Miami, where he was chosen by executive producer Fran Mires to anchor "Ocurrio asi" on the Spanish-language television network Telemundo.
Interview with Jessica Lynch and Notable Coverage
Gratas achieved notoriety for his exclusive interview with Private First Class Jessica Lynch of the US Army Quartermaster Corps, who was captured in Iraq and whose story later turned out to be exaggerated. He has also interviewed Yolanda Saldívar, the murderer of singer Selena Quintanilla, and George Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, and Colin Powell.
