Biography of Anthony Higgins
Anthony Higgins is a British actor of Irish descent. He was born into a family of immigrants from Southern Ireland who came to England before World War II. Higgins began acting in school theater and in 1967, after graduating from drama school in Birmingham, he made his professional stage debut. His first success came after starring in the films "A Walk with Love and Death" (1969), "Taste the Blood of Dracula" (1970), and the cult film "Vampire Circus" (1972). In all of these early career films, Higgins appeared under the surname Corlan.
Early Career
Higgins showcased his qualities as a serious dramatic actor in films like "Flavia the Heretic" (1974) and others. After working on television and with the Royal Shakespeare Company and other theaters for a long time, he was invited to Hollywood for a small role in "Raiders of the Lost Ark." In 1982, renowned British director Peter Greenaway gave Higgins the lead role in one of his best films, "The Draughtsman's Contract," which made him a star of art-house films.
Later Career
In the mid-1980s, Higgins appeared in several good films and TV series, such as the series "Lace" (1984-1985). He portrayed Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty in different decades of his career: the villain in the film "Young Sherlock Holmes" (1985) transformed into the great detective in the TV film "Baker Street: Sherlock Holmes Returns" (1993).
In the early 1990s, Higgins starred in several films in Hollywood and the UK, but by the end of the decade, he appeared more on television than in the big screen. In the early 2000s, he played a few episodic roles in films and TV series, and currently, unfortunately, he is a rare guest on the big screen as he devotes most of his time to television and music. In 2000, Anthony Higgins wrote and directed his own film, "Blood Count," which was screened at several European film festivals.
