Biography of Eric Berne
Eric Berne was an American psychologist and psychiatrist who is best known for his development of transactional analysis. He was born in Quebec, Canada, into a family of medical professionals. He completed his education at McGill University and attended courses at the psychiatric clinic in Yale from 1936 to 1938. Berne then pursued further studies at the New York (1941-1943) and San Francisco (1947-1956) Institutes of Psychoanalysis.
In 1943, Berne became a naturalized American citizen. From 1951 to 1954, he served in the United States Army, after which he worked in various psychiatric clinics. In the early 1960s, he began conducting seminars on group therapy. These seminars eventually led to the writing of his internationally bestselling book, "Games People Play."
Eric Berne was a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the Indian Psychiatric Society. Additionally, he founded the International Association of Transactional Analysis.
