Erin Hamlin is an American athlete and specialist in luge, professionally competing since 2005. She won gold in the women's singles competition at the World Championships in luge in 2009 in Lake Placid, New York. This race was the first out of the previous ninety-nine competitions of this level, where a German did not win.
Early Life and Introduction to Luge
Erin Hamlin was born and raised in Remsen, New York. Her father's employee was involved in supporting luge throughout the country, which sparked her interest in the sport. At the age of twelve, Erin and her older brother, who was already a talented athlete at the time, became interested in luge. She began her training program and eventually had to move to Lake Placid to pursue her luge career. Despite moving, Erin did not stop attending her regular school, and her homework had to be sent home by fax and email.
Rise to Success
Erin Hamlin's initial experiences in luge were not as impressive as the ones portrayed in Olympic coverage. However, young talented athletes like her aimed for more, pushing themselves to train intensely. At a certain point, Erin and her teammates were able to reach speeds of up to ninety miles per hour. By then, they had become experienced athletes capable of anticipating and effectively dealing with potential dangers.
Before her triumph at the World Championships, Erin performed remarkably well in the qualifying competitions for the 2006 Olympics. Surprisingly, she managed to place in the top five of the World Cup. Her success made her a local legend in Remsen, New York. After her victory at the World Championships, a new flavor of ice cream called "Erin Hamlin, World Champion" appeared in a local café. In an interview with The Associated Press, Erin mentioned that she enjoyed the treat.
Life Beyond Luge
Although it is gratifying to feel like a star, Erin believes that she has not achieved all that she is capable of. In her free time from luge training, she engages in activities such as playing soccer, kayaking, horseback riding, and cycling. After the 2010 Olympics, Erin plans to return to Empire State College in Saratoga Springs, New York, to complete her higher education.
