Ernst Busch: A German Icon of Theater, Cinema, and Communism
Early Life and Political InvolvementErnst Busch was born on January 22, 1900, in Kiel, Germany. After receiving training as a locksmith, he joined the Socialist Youth League in 1917 and participated in the Kiel sailors' uprising in 1918. In 1919, he became a member of the German Communist Party.
Theatrical and Musical Beginnings
Busch's interest in the arts led him to take acting and singing lessons. In 1924, he joined the Kiel City Theater. In 1927, he moved to Berlin, where he performed in prestigious theaters and began his film career.
Nazi Persecution and Exile
With the rise of the Nazis in 1933, Busch faced imminent danger. He narrowly escaped arrest and in 1935, along with his wife Eva, fled into exile. They lived in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and finally the Soviet Union.
Spanish Civil War and International Brigades
In 1937, Busch traveled to Spain to join the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War. He fought on the side of the Republicans against the fascist forces.
Return to Germany and Continued Legacy
After the war, Busch returned to Germany and resumed his acting and singing career. He became widely known in the Soviet Union for his performances of songs about the struggles of the working class. Busch died in Berlin on June 8, 1980, leaving behind a remarkable legacy as a talented artist and a dedicated communist.
