Belgian Entomologist and Naturalist

Early Life and Education

Édouard Charles Gustave Candèze, a renowned entomologist, was born in Lierneux, Belgium. From a young age, Candèze exhibited a keen interest in biology and insect classification, particularly Coleoptera (beetles). He pursued medical and natural sciences at the University of Liège.

Career in Entomology

Upon graduation, Candèze became the director of a psychiatric hospital. However, he continued to devote much of his time to insect studies. He became an authority on the Elateridae family (click beetles), amassing a vast collection of specimens.

Scientific Contributions

Candèze's scientific publications primarily focused on the systematics of Elateridae. His most significant works include:

"Catalogue des larves des Coléoptères connues jusqu'à ce jour etc." (1853)

"Monographie des Elatérides" (1856–1863)

"Elaterides nouveaux" (6 volumes, 1865–1896)

These contributions significantly advanced the understanding of Coleoptera classification.

Other Interests

In addition to his entomological pursuits, Candèze also wrote popular novels about animal life. Several of these works were translated into Russian and other languages.

Legacy

Édouard Candèze left an enduring mark on the field of entomology through his meticulous collection and groundbreaking research on click beetles. His works continue to be consulted by entomologists worldwide. His legacy as a distinguished Belgian entomologist and naturalist is firmly established.
