Early Life and Rise to Prominence

Ernesto Inarkiev, born in Russia, embarked on his chess journey at a young age. His exceptional talent earned him the title of Asian Youth Chess Champion at the age of 16 in 1999.

Move to Elista and International Recognition

In response to an invitation from Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, Inarkiev relocated to Elista with his family. There, he honed his skills under the guidance of renowned Russian coaches. In 1998 and 2000, he represented Kyrgyzstan at Chess Olympiads before switching his allegiance to Russia.

Youth Successes and Grandmaster Title

Inarkiev's remarkable abilities continued to shine in his teens. He became European U16 Champion in 2001 and won the Russian U20 Championship in 2002. In 2002, he achieved the prestigious title of Grandmaster.

Domestic and International Accomplishments

In the following years, Inarkiev earned accolades on both domestic and international stages. He secured bronze medals in the Russian Superfinal Championship (2006) and the Karpov International Tournament (2013). In 2016, he reached the pinnacle of his career by winning the European Individual Championship.

Ernesto Inarkiev is married and has a son. He serves as the President of the Ingushetia Chess Federation since December 2016.

Controversial World Blitz Championship Incident

In the 2017 World Blitz Championship, Inarkiev became embroiled in a controversial incident against world champion Magnus Carlsen. During the game, Inarkiev made an illegal move, leaving his king in check. Carlsen, failing to notice the error, continued playing. After Carlsen's subsequent move, Inarkiev claimed an illegal move by Carlsen and demanded victory. Amidst the confusion, an arbiter awarded the win to Inarkiev. However, the Chief Arbiter reversed the decision, proposing to resume the game from the position before Inarkiev's illegal move. Inarkiev refused to continue, resulting in a loss and a dismissed appeal.
