Ian Koshnitsky: A Renowned Australian Chess Master
Early Life and HeritageIan Koshnitsky was born into a Jewish family in Kishinev (now Chisinau, Moldova). In 1918, his family relocated to Shanghai and eventually settled in Brisbane, Australia, in 1926. Koshnitsky's surname traces its roots to the Moldovan town of Koshnitsa.
Military Service and Chess Advocacy
During World War II, Koshnitsky served in the anti-tank corps. Following the war, he became a prominent chess advocate, authoring the chess column for the Sydney-based "Sun-Herald" from 1949 to 1994. He also ran a chess academy in Sydney from 1947 to 1960.
Chess Accomplishments
Koshnitsky's impressive chess career included multiple championship titles. He was crowned Australian Chess Champion twice, from 1933–1934 and again from 1939–1945. He also won the Queensland Championship three times between 1926 and 1928, the New South Wales Championship seven times, and the South Australian Championship in 1966. His wife, Evelyn Koshnitsky, mirrored his success by winning the women's title that same year.
International Recognition
In 1972, Koshnitsky achieved the title of International Master by the International Correspondence Chess Federation (ICCF). He also became an honorary member of FIDE (World Chess Federation) in 1993, serving on its Central Committee and as President for Zone 10 (Southeast Asia and Pacific).
Legacy and Family
Koshnitsky's son, Peter G. Koshnitsky, became a renowned sports journalist and chess author, representing Australia in lacrosse. His daughter-in-law, Ngan Phan Koshnitsky, claimed the Australian Women's Chess Championship in 1998. In Australia, the Koshnitsky Cup is held annually in his honor. Koshnitsky's contributions to chess ensured his legacy as a respected and influential figure in the sport.
