General Klapka's Role in the Hungarian Revolution

Teenok István Klapka was born on April 7, 1809, in Temesvár, Hungary. He entered military service at a young age and rose through the ranks, earning the respect of his superiors for his strategic acumen and bravery.

Hungarian Revolution

In 1848, when the Hungarian Revolution erupted, Klapka joined the Hungarian government and led his regiment against the Serbian separatists.

Commander-in-Chief

In December 1848, Klapka was appointed commander-in-chief of the Hungarian forces in southern Hungary. He fought valiantly, but ultimately surrendered to the Russian General Ivan Paskevich at Világos on August 13, 1849.

Trial and Sentencing

Following the surrender, Klapka was put on trial by a military court and sentenced to death. However, the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment, and he was later released in 1851.

Exile and Legacy

After his release, Klapka went into exile in England and France, where he continued to advocate for Hungarian independence. He died in Pest, Hungary, on May 17, 1892.
