Early Life and EducationErnst Boris Chain was born in Berlin, Germany, on June 19, 1906. He pursued his studies at the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin, where he earned his doctorate in 1930.
Emigration to England
In 1933, due to political turmoil in Germany, Chain left for England. He joined the University of Cambridge, working under the renowned biochemist Frederick Hopkins.
Discovery of Penicillin
In 1938, Chain and his colleague, Howard Florey, embarked on a groundbreaking study of antibacterial substances produced by microorganisms. In 1940, they successfully extracted penicillin from a culture of the Penicillium mold. Chain determined its chemical properties and structure, and developed methods for its purification.
Medical Applications of Penicillin
In 1941, Chain's breakthrough came with the first successful use of penicillin to treat human infections. His discovery revolutionized the field of medicine and paved the way for the development of life-saving antibiotics.
Further Discoveries and Contributions
Chain's research extended beyond penicillin. He identified the enzyme penicillinase, which reduces the effectiveness of the antibiotic. He also investigated the mechanism of action of lysozyme and the metabolic processes in tumor cells. Additionally, Chain devised methods for biochemical microanalysis and contributed to the technology of microbiological production.
International Recognition and Legacy
For his groundbreaking contributions, Chain was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945, along with Fleming and Florey. He received numerous other accolades, including the Jöns Jacob Berzelius Medal and the Paul Ehrlich Prize. Ernst Boris Chain left an indelible mark on the world of science, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and the discovery of a life-changing antibiotic. He passed away in Ireland on August 12, 1979.
