Biography of Ernst Georg Nauck

Ernst Georg Nauck was a German scientist specializing in the fields of pathology, dermatology, and tropical medicine. He was born in St. Petersburg in 1897 into a family of German doctors, with his mother being of Baltic origin. Until 1914, he lived and studied in Russia, but shortly before the outbreak of war, his family moved to Germany.

Nauck studied medicine at the Leipzig and Greifswald universities, and from 1920, he worked at the Pathological Institute and hospitals in Berlin. He later became a scientific collaborator in the Department of Bacteriology at the Institute of Marine and Tropical Diseases in Hamburg. In 1924-1927, Nauck lived in China where he conducted research and taught, and from 1927 to 1929, he led the pathological department at Hospital San Juan de Dios in San José, Costa Rica. In the following years, he undertook scientific trips to the Soviet Union (Caucasus).

In 1934, he was appointed as an associate professor at the University of Hamburg and in 1936-1937, he made a series of scientific trips to Brazil, the Dominican Republic, and Colombia. In 1939, he co-authored a book with Gustav Gimza on their expedition to Espirito Santo, titled "Scientific Expedition to Espirito Santo: Folk-biological studies of a German-origin population in Central Brazil as a contribution to the acclimatization problem."

After the death of Peter Müllens in June 1943, who had been the director of the Bernard Nocht Institute of Tropical Medicine since 1933, Ernst Georg Nauck was appointed as the new director. He faced the challenging task of rebuilding and organizing the institute's operations after the war. In 1953, Nauck became the dean of the Medical Faculty at the University of Hamburg, and on October 1, 1958, he was elected as the rector, marking the culmination of his long career in scientific and educational fields. On March 31, 1963, this accomplished scientist stepped down from his position as the director of the Institute of Tropical Medicine, which he had led for 20 years.

In 1957, Nauck traveled to Peru for scientific work and was honored with the title of honorary professor at the University of San Marcos. In the final years of his life, he made significant contributions to the establishment of the Daniel Alcides Carrión Institute of Tropical Medicine at the University of San Marcos in Peru, which was founded on July 15, 1963. Nauck's main areas of scientific research were tropical dermatology and pathology of tropical diseases, and he authored over 200 scientific works in these fields. He participated in numerous conferences and events worldwide.

Dr. Nauck, together with his colleagues from the Hamburg Institute of Tropical Medicine, co-authored a textbook on tropical medicine (Lehrbuch der Tropenkrankheiten) and founded the Journal of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology (Zeitschrift für Tropenmedizin und Parasitologie).
