Fritz Baade: German General of World War II
Early Life and CareerBorn into a military family, Fritz Baade joined the German army as a volunteer in August 1914. He fought on the Eastern Front and rose through the ranks, earning the Iron Crosses of both classes and the Hanseatic Cross.
Interwar Years
After the war, Baade continued his military service in the Reichswehr, serving in the cavalry. By the outbreak of World War II, he had become a battalion commander and a major.
World War II
Baade participated in the Polish and French campaigns. In June 1942, he received the Knight's Cross for his actions in the Battle of Gazala. He was also awarded the German Cross in Gold for his bravery in the Western Desert.
Command of 90th Light Infantry Division
From December 1943, Baade commanded the 90th Light Infantry Division in Italy. He distinguished himself in combat, leading the division to numerous victories and earning the Oak Leaves to his Knight's Cross in February 1944.
Command of 81st Army Corps
In March 1945, Baade became commander of the 81st Army Corps, operating in Germany. Despite fierce fighting, his corps was unable to halt the Allied advance.
Death and Honors
On April 24, 1945, Baade was severely wounded in an air attack. He succumbed to his injuries in hospital on May 8, 1945, the last day of the war. Baade's bravery and leadership were recognized with the bestowal of the Swords to his Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves.
