Rubén Lagus: A Distinguished Finnish Military Commander
Rubén Lagus was a renowned Finnish general who played a pivotal role in his country's military history. Born in 1896 to a Swedish-speaking family in the Koski parish, Lagus embarked on a career in the military that would see him rise to the rank of major general.
Early Military Career
Lagus initially served as a quartermaster during the Winter War (1939-1940). In the subsequent Russo-Finnish War (1941-1944), he held the position of commander of the Finnish Armored Division, the country's only such unit. On July 22, 1941, Lagus became the first recipient of the prestigious Mannerheim Cross.
The Karelian Front
In 1944, Lagus' Armored Division was deployed to the Karelian Front, where the Red Army launched a massive offensive on June 9. Despite the overwhelming Soviet forces, the Finnish self-propelled guns under Lagus' command managed to destroy 87 tanks and numerous anti-tank weapons.
Post-War Service
After the war, Lagus continued to serve as commander of the 2nd Division until his retirement from the military in 1947. He transitioned to a civilian career as director of Lohjan Salo Oy, where he remained until 1959.
Legacy
Rubén Lagus's military prowess and leadership earned him a place in Finnish history. In 1996, a statue was erected in the Haikari Park in Lohja, commemorating his legacy and the contributions he made to his nation.
