Early Life and Education
Ersin Tatar was born on September 7, 1960, in Nicosia, Cyprus. He attended primary school in Kyrenia and then moved to England in 1971 to continue his education at Forest School in London. In 1979, he graduated high school and went on to study economics at Cambridge University, graduating in 1982.
Career in Business and Accounting
After completing his university education, Tatar worked as an accountant for PriceWaterhouse in England from 1982 to 1986. He then joined PollyPeck, where he remained until 1991. In that year, he moved to Ankara, Turkey, and worked for FMC Nurol Defense Industry Co. from 1991 to 1992. From 1992 to 2001, he served as the Chief Financial Officer of ShowTV.
Active Involvement in the Turkish Cypriot Community
During his time in Turkey, Tatar became an active member of the Turkish Cypriot community. He served as the President of the Istanbul Turkish Cypriot Cultural Association from 1997 to 2001.
Political Career
Tatar entered politics in 2003, joining the National Unity Party (UBP). In 2009, he was elected to parliament for the first time and served as Finance Minister under the government of Derviş Eroğlu until his party's defeat in the 2013 elections. In 2015, he ran for the leadership of the UBP but was unsuccessful. In 2018, he ran again and was elected as the party's leader.
Presidency of Northern Cyprus
In 2020, Tatar was elected President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in a two-round election. He won the presidency with 52% of the vote in the second round, held on October 18, 2020.
Positions and Beliefs
Tatar supports a "two-state for two peoples" solution to the Cyprus conflict. He is also a supporter of the Turkish military presence in Northern Cyprus and has voiced his support for Turkey.
