King of Cyprus and Titular King of Jerusalem
Early Life and SuccessionJean de Lusignan was born into the House of Lusignan as the eldest son of Hugh III, King of Cyprus, and Isabella Ibelin. He ascended to the throne in late March 1284, succeeding his father.
Coronation and Titles
On May 11, 1284, Jean was crowned in the Cathedral of Saint Sophia in Nicosia. He inherited the title of King of Cyprus and assumed the titular title of King of Jerusalem. However, the bulk of the Kingdom of Jerusalem was controlled by Charles I of Anjou, with only Tyre and Beirut remaining under his authority.
Reign and Health
Born with a chronic illness, Jean's reign was short-lived. He struggled to quell unrest on the island and in the Kingdom of Jerusalem. According to some historians, his reign ended abruptly due to poisoning by his brother.
Death and Succession
Jean died on May 20, 1285, without having married or fathered any children. As a result, his brother, Henry II, became his successor on the throne of Cyprus.
