Early Life and EducationEttore Bugatti, born in Milan, Italy, on September 15, 1881, inherited a passion for art and design from his family. His father, Carlo Bugatti, was a renowned furniture designer, and his maternal grandfather, Giovanni Segantini, was a famous painter. Ettore studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan alongside his brother, Rembrandt, a renowned animal sculptor.
Automotive Beginnings
Bugatti's interest in automobiles emerged early on. At the age of 17, he crafted his first vehicle, which earned him a gold medal at an exhibition in Milan. This success gained the attention of Count Gunelli, who provided financial support for Bugatti to build his second "Bugatti" automobile two years later, which also received accolades at the Milan exhibition. This achievement established his reputation as a promising constructor.
Collaboration and Innovation
Throughout his career, Bugatti collaborated with numerous automobile manufacturers, including De Dietrich (France) and Turcat-Méry (France). His fascination with car racing fueled his innovation, and in 1909, he introduced his first racing car, the Bugatti-10. Bugatti himself became a renowned racer during this period.
The Birth of Bugatti Automobiles
In 1909, Bugatti founded his own automobile company, Bugatti Automobiles, in Molsheim, France. The company gained prominence for its luxurious and high-performance vehicles. Bugatti's designs were characterized by elegance, innovation, and a meticulous attention to detail.
Personal Life and Legacy
Bugatti married Barbara Maria Guiseppina Mascherpa Bolzoni in 1907, with whom he had four children. After his first wife's passing, he remarried in 1942 to Geneviève Marguerite Delcuze. They welcomed two more children, Teresa and Michael. Ettore Bugatti passed away on August 21, 1947, at the age of 65, leaving behind an enduring legacy in the automotive industry. Bugatti Automobiles continues to produce exclusive and exceptional vehicles to this day, honoring the vision and brilliance of its founder.
