Early Life and Education

Eugen von Knilling was born in 1865 in Munich, Germany. He studied law at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.

Political Career

Minister of Education

From 1912 to 1918, Knilling served as the Minister of Education in the government of the Kingdom of Bavaria.

Prime Minister of Bavaria

In 1922, Knilling was elected Prime Minister of Bavaria. His tenure coincided with the political and economic crisis that followed the Ruhr Conflict.

The Beer Hall Putsch: Emergency Rule and Arrest

In September 1923, Knilling declared a state of emergency and appointed Gustav von Kahr as General Commissioner of Bavaria, granting him almost dictatorial powers. This decision was a direct response to the country's political and economic turmoil. During the subsequent Beer Hall Putsch, Knilling and his government were arrested by stormtroopers led by Rudolf Hess.

Aftermath and Retirement

After losing the state parliament elections in May 1924, Knilling resigned from office and retired from politics. He passed away in 1927 at the age of 62.
