Sultan of Oman
Haitham bin Tariq Al Saidwas proclaimed the Sultan of Oman on January 11, 2020. He is the cousin of the late Sultan Qaboos and previously served as the country's Minister of Heritage and Culture.
Early Life and Education
Sultan Haitham was born on October 13, 1955, in Muscat, Oman. A member of the ruling Al Said dynasty, he earned a Diploma in Foreign Service from Oxford University in 1979 and completed postgraduate studies at Pembroke College.
Political Career
Prior to his ascension as Sultan, Haitham held various ministerial positions, including:
Minister of Heritage and Culture
Deputy Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs (1986-1994)
Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1994-2002)
He also served as Secretary General for External Relations and as Chairman of the Anglo-Omani Society. Additionally, he led the Oman Vision 2040 committee, which oversaw the country's social and economic development plans until 2040.
Succession to the Throne
Following the death of Sultan Qaboos bin Said on January 10, 2020, Haitham bin Tariq was named his successor at an emergency meeting of Oman's Council in Al-Bustan. According to Oman's state television, upon Sultan Qaboos's passing, a letter was opened revealing Haitham as the chosen heir.
Crown Prince
On January 13, 2021, it was announced that Sultan Haitham's eldest son, Prince Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, had been appointed as Oman's first Crown Prince. The position was created in January 2021 through an amendment to the country's Basic Law.
Hobbies and Interests
Sultan Haitham is an avid sports enthusiast. He served as president of the Oman Football Association from its founding in 1978 until the mid-1980s.
Family
Sultan Haitham's paternal grandfather was Said bin Taimur, the 13th Sultan of Oman (1913-1932). His father, Tariq bin Taimur Al Muazam Al Said, was Prime Minister of Oman from 1970 to 1972.
Sultan Haitham is married to Ahad bint Abdullah bin Hamad Al Busaidi. They have four children:
