Eugene Klein, an American philatelist of Hungarian origin, made significant contributions to the field of stamp collecting. He served as a renowned philatelic dealer, auctioneer, and president of the American Philatelic Society (APS).
Early Career and Expertise
Klein's career in philately began in 1911 when he became the official expert of the APS, a position he held until 1931. Additionally, he served as the society's international secretary from 1928 to 1935 and again from 1937 until his passing.
Presidency and Contributions
In 1935, Klein was elected president of the APS, a role he held for two years. During his tenure, he further strengthened the society's international presence. He also penned the groundbreaking book, "United States Waterway Packetmarks," published in 1940. This work became a cornerstone reference for philatelists specializing in the popular collecting area.
Notable Acquisition and Recognition
Klein's most famous acquisition was the purchase of the only complete sheet of the rare "Inverted Jenny" error stamp from its discoverer, William T. Robey. This prized piece solidified his legacy as a discerning philatelic dealer. In 1944, Klein was inducted into the APS Hall of Fame.
