Lydia Ivanovna Abramova: Soviet Astronomer
Early Life and EducationLydia Ivanovna Abramova was born in Moscow in 1903. She completed her undergraduate studies at Moscow State University in 1924. From 1925 to 1928, she pursued a graduate degree at the Astronomy and Geodesy Institute affiliated with Moscow State University.
Professional Career
Early Career in Geodesy and AstronomyFrom 1928 to 1932, Abramova worked in the field of geodesy. In 1932, she joined the Sternberg Astronomical Institute (GAISH). She also began teaching at Moscow State University in 1934, becoming a professor in 1949.
Contributions to Astrometry and Solar Research
Abramova made significant contributions to the fields of photographic astrometry and solar research. In 1936-1937, she determined the proper motions of stars in the region of the dark nebula in Taurus-Perseus and the Orion Nebula. She also conducted observations of double stars using a 38-centimeter astrograph.
Solar Eclipse Expeditions
Abramova played a leading role in several expeditions to observe total solar eclipses. She was involved in the 1936 expedition to observe the eclipse from various locations in the USSR. She also participated in the analysis of the data to determine the structure and rotation of the solar corona. She continued this research in subsequent eclipses in 1941, 1945, 1952, and 1954.
Study of the Solar Corona
Abramova extensively studied the fine structure and internal motions of the solar corona. She examined data from eclipses between 1887 and 1941, focusing on the relationship between the orientation of coronal streamers and the phase of solar activity and heliographic latitude.
Legacy
Abramova's contributions to astronomical education and research are well-recognized. She authored the widely used textbook "Photographic Astrometry." Her efforts also played a key role in upgrading the facilities at the GAISH observatory on the Lenin Hills.
