Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824–1898) was a French artist known for his monumental style of decorative painting. He was born on December 14, 1824, in Lyon. Influenced by Ingres, Puvis de Chavannes developed his own unique style characterized by a rigid organization of composition and the placement of figures in the landscape through parallel planes.

Opposition to Contemporary Art Movements

Puvis de Chavannes remained opposed to the contemporary art movements of his time, such as realism and impressionism. He was an idealist, but his works cannot be considered mere illustrations of abstract ideas and concepts. Instead, they represented symbolic embodiments of those ideas. He also painted three compositions, "Sacred Grove," "Vision of Antiquity," and "Christian Inspiration," to decorate the staircase of the Palace of Arts in Lyon (1883–1886). Additionally, he created allegorical works representing the arts and sciences for the amphitheater of the Sorbonne (1887) and a cycle of paintings for the Public Library in Boston, titled "Muses Welcoming the Genius of Enlightenment" (1893–1895).
